Metherall said when a little girl found out she didn’t have to return her costume, she squealed with delight. “What’s even more amazing is when they find out they can keep the costumes after the parade.”

“It’s amazing to watch when they are choosing outfits,” said Michele Metherall, the friendly face at the front desk at Harbour View. “Our goal is to have students and parents get involved, donate time or items and not just money.”īefore the parade, children came in and picked their costumes and accessories, all neatly arranged and displayed. “Our Hawes PTA board decided we wanted to give teachers, parents and students the opportunity to participate in community service activities,” Hansen said. Sara Hansen, president of Hawes Elementary School PTA, collected costumes, too. This year, more than 100 costumes and accessories donated by neighbors and friends calling themselves Harbour Hearts were taken to the school. “Every child should have the chance to experience a fun time in the parade,” said resident Debbie Berry.

The idea turned into a tradition in Huntington Harbour. She started a costume collection and helped organize and deliver get-ups galore to the school. Parents couldn’t afford them, and one Harbour resident, Pat Ross, noticed the children had sad faces when they marched in the parade. Several years ago, some of the children didn’t have costumes. “It is just a delight to watch the children parade around and the adults cheering them on.” “We look forward to this every year,” principal Cindy Osterhout said.
